10 Makeup Hacks to Enhance Your Eyes

You’ve heard that the eyes are the windows to the soul – and that can put a lot of pressure on your eye makeup skills! But don’t be intimidated, because we’ve uncovered some eye makeup hacks to make sure yours reflect your stunning inner beauty. As with the rest of the face, makeup can accentuate your eyes’ best features when done properly. So, if your smoky eye has a tendency to go from sultry to silly, read on. From starting with a proper base to remedies for clumpy mascara, we’ve rounded up our top 10 eye makeup hacks you need to know.

  1. Prep your lids with a primer.

This is a step a lot of us skip, but it makes all the difference. When creating a full look, use a specially formulated eyeshadow primer to create a base for blending. It will also help your shadow colors stand out and last all day long. In a pinch, dab a little concealer on your lids before applying your eye shadow. Our Complete Concealer has a wax base that makes it a great choice for this use! Even when you’re going for a natural look sans eye shadow, applying a primer to your eyelids will open up and brighten your eyes.

  1. Apply concealer in a triangle shape.

Speaking of bright eyes, dark undereye circles can hinder that youthful, “I got eight hours of sleep” glow. Instead of applying your Complete Concealer directly on your under eye circles, apply it in an upside down triangle shape with the base beginning at your lash line and the tip ending at the bottom of your cheek. This shape will brighten up your whole face!

  1. Connect the dot to the perfect cat eye.

A cat eye is the holy grail of put-together, elegant looks. What’s not quite as chic is how frustrating it can be to create a perfectly winged line, let alone two that are symmetrical. To ease that frustration, try connecting the dots. Create a series of dots along your lash line. Place the first dot just above the start of your inner iris, the second just above your pupil, a third on the outside of your iris, a fourth where the white of your eyes ends, a fifth at the crease of your eye and a final dot just a bit further from the fourth, in line with your brow. From there, all you have to do is connect the dots!

  1. Use a spoon to wing it out.

If connecting the dots leaves you needing a little more guidance, use a spoon! Begin lining your upper lash line regularly, then, when it’s time for that pesky wing, press the rounded side of the spoon against your eyelid and use it to trace the perfect wing! Our Perfect Eyeliner Pen is smooth and precise, perfect for all your winged liner needs.

  1. Swap in eye shadow for eyeliner.

Even if you aren’t going for a cat eye, regular eye lining can be intimidating. Try using a dark shadow and a very thin brush instead – it will give you the emphasizing effect of an eyeliner without the struggle. For a slightly sharper look, wet the brush before swiping it in shadow. Our Perfect Eyeshadows are made to be used wet or dry for a variety of finishes.

  1. Get lifted lashes that last.

Lifted lashes create a natural, wide eyed effect. Heat up your eyelash curler with a quick blast from your hairdryer before curling your lashes to keep your lashes lifted and curled all day long. Just be sure to check the temperature on your hand before applying to your eyes!

  1. De-clump mascara by warming it up.

There is nothing worse than going to apply mascara and finding that it’s clumpy. Sometimes all it needs it a little warmth! First, try sticking it in your pocket or under your arm while you apply the rest of your eye makeup. This will heat up and loosen up the formula, making it easier to swipe through your lashes. Try our Perfect Mascara, made with lengthening fibers, to add a little length to your lift!

  1. Revive it with a few drops of saline.

If your mascara is still a little clumpy after heating, add a drop or two of saline solution to your tube. The saline will loosen up the mascara and remove any globs. While these mascara hacks are great to use once or twice, we still recommend replacing your mascara every month or two to make sure your eyes stay healthy!

  1. Frame your eyes with highlighted brows.

Good brows are just as important for enhancing your beautiful eyes as long lashes. Accentuate your brow shape by highlighting under and above your brow. Apply highlighter or a light champagne shadow to the brow bone and inner corners of your eyes to create a brightening and lifting effect. Our Perfect Eyeshadow in Cream Boat works well for lighter skin tones, while Rose Colored Glasses shines on deeper complexions.

10. Master the brow fade.
Natural brows are not all one shade. They start a bit lighter at their inner corner and darken as they get to the end. Use two colors of a pencil to fill in your brows, following your natural coloring. Our Claim to Frame brow pencil comes in a variety of shades, perfect for mastering the brow fade. Each pencil also features a spoolie to help you evenly blend and tame hairs.
